Nobody has to tell you that crimson lipstick makes you look cheap and champagne makes you dizzy and the man clinging to your arm has been leeching the heart out of you for months.  Nobody feels obligated to tell you about all his one-night stands or the girlfriends he keeps on the side like potatoes or the fact that you haven't gotten a decent hour's sleep since he came home with liquor on his clothes and anger in his eyes.  Nobody should have to tell you that you deserve better than his Ineedyoutoposeforme demands and his pleaseforgivemeImsorry sobs and his constant stream of half-assed Iloveyousomuch promises.  Nobody should have to tell you to run away, run while you can...but they do.

Tell me something, honey.  Does he linger for kisses in the mornings or wake you at midnight to ask you what you're thinking or send you flowers when he isn't feeling guilty about the lipstick smeared across his collars?  Does he make you toast the way you like or knock on your door just to show you the stars?  Does he even tell you he loves you anymore, or do you just imagine that he does so you don't feel bad about hanging up on him at three a.m.?  Tell me something, darling.  Do you even love him anymore, or is he just a habit you can't break out of?
I picked up :iconhalfangelrisesagain:'s book, The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories and looked through the contents and was inspired by this title:

People Shouldn't have to Be the Ones to Tell You, by Gary Lutz.

This is mostly nonfiction, with some fiction thrown in for color. These are all the things the world was always telling me. All the things I still haven't forgotten I ignored for so very long.

The second paragraph hit me like a brick. Literally tears in my eyes.
