his promise-band rubs her skin
like sandpaper on knotted wood
and heartache warbles
like the closing of a country song
as she dreams quietly
between keeping hope
and burning the bridge connecting them.

love me,
baby.
only me forever.


she begs forgiveness
though she knows she did nothing

(nothing,
absolutely nothing)

wrong,
the radio in the background
humming softly
those hopes she's slowly forgetting to dream with.

and he hops the shortest flight
and soars twelve-thousand miles
only to understand
his plane landed too late
to keep her feet firmly on his ground.
